I second this complaint. I have 3 small children who live right near this intersection and I hesitate to walk with them in our own neighborhood because it is not safe. Drivers often cut through broad street extension to avoid the traffic light at highlight which in turn has them driving extremely fast. The road is also curved which does not allow clear visibility when driving within the speed limit, nevermind when speeding. I’ve almost been hit backing out of my driveway for this very reason. Many people blow through the red light when the walk sign is illuminated since many are used to the light being flashing. I have a nonverbal child and this poses a real threat to his safety and the safety of our community.

It is getting very dangerous, especially at the intersection as people turn left headed towards Jackson St. While the daytime police precense is great, people are flying down this street at 50+ MPH all day and night. Looking at the number of tickets or warnings given out recently should show a major issue with speeding.

No real problem with this on Dalton Parkway, since the road surface is so bumpy that it makes its own speed bumps! But I'd agree that a regular traffic light at the intersection of Broad, Broad, Pickering, and Dalton Pkwy would be more effective than the blinking light.

UPDATE: A town meeting was setup for this issue where everyone shared their issues with the traffic surrounding the Broad St. area. There were officials there who were relevant to create necessary changes. I am leaving this issue open as no action/changes have been made to the traffic situation on the Broad St area.

This is still an issue. In fact, since the quarantine started, it’s actually gotten much worse. People seem to be racing on broad st. on all hours of the day.

Thank you for your input. The Traffic & Parking Department met at the end of 2021 with Councilor Morsillo to discuss the needs of the Broad Street neighborhood. We will be kicking off a neighborhood meeting to discuss the future of Broad Street with the Traffic & Parking Commission this year. Please be on the lookout for this meeting if you are interested in participating. We are also engaging with a transportation consultant to help with this effort.

The Traffic & Parking Commission will be discussing the existing conditions on Broad Street this Wednesday 5/25 at 6pm via Zoom. Unlike the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Projects with temporary devices, this is a longer term infrastructure project. We hope to have residents in attendance to give input on what they would like to see on Broad Street and discuss potential interim measures. This information will guide the transportation consultants into the next phase where they will design alternatives for the cross-section of Broad Street. The City of Salem Traffic & Parking Department has worked with a consultant to develop an interim roadway striping plan in an effort to reduce lane widths, reduce vehicle speeds, and enhance pedestrian visibility to drivers. This plan will be presented at the next Traffic & Parking Commission on Wednesday, February 8th at 6:30pm. The meeting will be held virtually, and the agenda (which also contains the Zoom meeting link) will be posted on the City’s website at https://www.salemma.gov/node/97483/agenda/2023. Please note that a longer-term vision for Broad Street will continue to be developed as this would require much more consideration for existing drainage structures, existing trees, lighting, pedestrian ramp and sidewalk construction, as well as potential bicycle accommodations, etc. This striping plan would serve as an interim measure while this long-term effort progresses.
