Description
Is Alpharetta planning on any handicapped-restricted parking spaces on the west side of Main St. in the "historic downtown" area? Since most of the on-street spaces were removed, the parking is now restricted to 6 or 7 spaces, none of them handicapped. There are only 2 such spaces around the back of SmokeJack, not nearly enough for the nearby businesses, and difficult to find if you don't know how to get there. The city parking deck is too far to walk from, and therefore impossible for the handicapped to use. Hopefully this issue will get considerable attention. Are there not ADA restrictions about the number of spaces required?

The City will not be designating any on-street parking spaces along Main Street / State Route 9 as handicapped-restricted. There is not sufficient width in this area to meet ADA requirements, and provision of ADA spaces along a roadway as heavily traveled as this one would not be safe.
There are, however, additional ADA spaces within Downtown Alpharetta, aside from the ones referenced in the original issue report. The most convenient to the majority of restaurants are located in the large municipal parking lot on Old Roswell Street. These spaces are rarely occupied. Additional spaces can be found on Milton Avenue and in the large municipal parking lot on Roswell Street, the entrance to which is beside Made restaurant.
The current stock of ADA designated parking spaces does meet the number required by the ADA.
